About Savigny-lès-Beaune, Jane Eyre, 2022

Whether crafting wines from the Côte-d'Or, Beaujolais, or her native Victoria, Jane's wines exude her distinct style—delicate and inviting, adorned with supple tannins and vibrant, luscious fruits.

Through gentle extraction techniques, thoughtful oak usage, and early bottling, Jane has created Burgundies that are accessible and appealing even in their early stages.

"30% whole bunch, raised in three 300-litre barrels, none new after a touch of acidification during fermentation. Long a fan of her 1er cru Savigny, we were keen to try Janes’s first village level wine from the appellation and were not disappointed. Bright, red fruit and rose petal nose. Crunchy, juicy, attack, with a solid core of perfumed sappy red cherries and svelte, plummy tannins. Good tension and equilibrium, this will have no shortage of appeal."
Tom Harrow, Head Wine Guru

Currently showing its primary fruit character with vibrant raspberry and cherry flavours at the forefront, this wine will begin to integrate and develop secondary complexity from 2027 onwards. The gentle whole-bunch fermentation and restrained oak will allow earthy, spicy notes to emerge over the next 2-3 years while the bright fruit softens into more nuanced red berry flavours. We expect the wine to hit its peak drinking window between 2028-2031, when the fruit, earth, and floral elements achieve perfect harmony.

What the critics say:

88-91/100 Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

"A one-shot opportunity from a friend before he pulled out the vines. 3 x 300 litre barrels made. One of the deeper purple colours in the centre, with plenty of fruit energy. Lots of raspberry fruit energy, less fragrance than the Vergelesses, plush through the middle, a delicious juicy well balanced 2022. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023. ****."

Tasting Notes

AppearanceMedium ruby with purple highlights and good clarity.

NoseBright raspberry and rose petal leap from the glass with underlying red cherry and subtle spice. There's a lovely floral lift that speaks to the gentle whole-bunch fermentation, adding perfume without overwhelming the fruit. A touch of forest floor earthiness adds complexity.

PalateCrunchy and juicy on entry with vibrant red cherry fruit at the core. The tannins are svelte and plummy, providing structure without heaviness. Good tension runs through the wine, with bright acidity balancing the sappy fruit character. The 30% whole bunch adds a subtle spicy edge.

FinishMedium length with persistent red fruit and a hint of rose petal returning on the close.

Overall impressionA beautifully balanced village Burgundy that captures Jane Eyre's accessible yet serious style perfectly.

Food Pairings

In Burgundy, this style of Savigny would be the perfect match for the region's famous coq au vin, where the wine's bright acidity cuts through the rich sauce while echoing the red wine used in cooking. Local charcuterie like jambon persillé or terrine de campagne pair beautifully with the wine's earthy undertones and moderate tannins. The wine's elegance also complements the region's renowned chaource cheese, while its fruit-forward character makes it ideal with simple roasted chicken with herbs or boeuf bourguignon prepared with a lighter touch.

OUR GROWERS

Jane Eyre

When we first met Jane in 2015, we were amazed to hear that her wines didn’t have a presence in the UK (with a name like Jane Eyre, how could we resist bringing her wines to the UK market?).

It’s been a real pleasure to see how her reputation has grown with accompanied critical acclaim from luminaries such as Jancis Robinson, Tim Atkin, and Neal Martin. More recently she received her RVF second star and was also awarded Negociant of the Year 2020.
