Savigny-lès-Beaune is one of Burgundy's quietly reliable addresses — never quite getting the headlines of Pommard or Volnay, yet consistently producing reds of real elegance and character. Les Vergelesses is the village's most celebrated premier cru, sitting on the hill that marks the boundary with Pernand-Vergelesses, and the wines it produces tend to be firmer and more structured than Savigny's other lieux-dits.
This 3-litre format is a serious statement of intent — large formats age more gracefully and slowly, making this a particularly compelling proposition for the cellar.
Les Vergelesses occupies the upper slopes of the hill of Savigny, bordering Pernand-Vergelesses to the north. The soils here are predominantly limestone-rich brown earths over oolitic and Bathonian limestone bedrock, giving wines a firmer, more mineral character than those from Savigny's lower, more clay-influenced vineyards. The elevation and north-facing aspect of parts of the lieu-dit moderate ripening, which tends to preserve acidity and freshness in the finished wine. The result is Savigny at its most structured and age-worthy.
Savigny-lès-Beaune sits just west of Beaune itself, tucked into the valley of the Rhoin, and its wines are often described as softer and earlier-drinking than those of the Côte de Beaune's more celebrated communes. The appellation produces mainly red Pinot Noir, with a small amount of white Chardonnay. It has no grand crus, but its premiers crus — of which Les Vergelesses is the most prized — can reach a quality that punches well above the village's reputation. Compared to neighbours like Pommard or Volnay, Savigny tends to offer better value for money without sacrificing Côte de Beaune character.
