San Leonardo is the wine that quietly confounds everyone who assumes Italy can't do Bordeaux-style reds. Made by the Guerrieri Gonzaga family from their estate in Trentino's Lagarina Valley, it blends Cabernet Sauvignon with Carmenère and a touch of Merlot — a combination that owes as much to the family's aristocratic Franco-Italian roots as it does to the Alpine landscape around them. The 2015 is a genuinely beautiful vintage for the estate: warm enough to ripen fully, cool enough to hold the structure that defines this wine's character. Think dark plum, tobacco, cedar, and dried herbs, wrapped in tannins that are firm but no longer forbidding.
Marchese Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga spent years studying in Bordeaux before returning to transform this estate, and the Bordelais DNA is evident — but San Leonardo is no imitation. The Carmenère brings a herbal, almost wild-country quality that gives it real personality. At eleven years old, it's hitting its stride.
What the critics say:
"The 2015 San Leonardo pours forth with a beautiful velvety appearance and sultry dark garnet color. This wine shows a lot of life and dark fruit purity with black plum, blackberry, cassis and tarry prune. There is a delightful note of black pepper that is specific to this warm and sunny vintage. The fruit shows softer and richer concentration compared to past vintages and more pulpy density that gives this edition a bigger profile in terms of mouthfeel. Production is 75,000 bottles. San Leonardo is a wine made for long aging, but the nice thing about this vintage is that the bouquet remains quite accessible at this young age. Nevertheless, I'd still suggest keeping this bottle in your cellar so that it can calmly finish its evolution."
