Optimal drinking window: 2026 - 2028
Trentham Estate’s 2024 Chardonnay is a nicely balanced, easy-going Australian Chardonnay, with plenty of ripe fruit without going down the overly rich, buttery route. Expect tropical and stone-fruit notes – peach and nectarine – with a touch of soft, spicy oak. Medium-bodied, fresh and rounded, with good acidity keeping everything lively on the finish. The fruit comes from Trentham’s Murray Darling vineyards, with a portion fermented in 500-litre French oak puncheons before blending.
A very good all-rounder: try it with roast chicken, grilled trout or a creamy mushroom pasta.
This is a wine built for near-term pleasure rather than the cellar. Right now, in 2026, the fruit is at its most vivid and the oak is nicely integrated. By 2028 it will still be drinking well, but the citrus freshness that makes it so appealing will gradually soften.
Tasting Notes
AppearancePale gold with a bright, clean rim.
NoseFresh and inviting, with lemon zest, green apple, and a whisper of white peach. There's a soft, creamy undertone from the oak that keeps things rounded without overwhelming the fruit.
PalateLight to medium-bodied with a pleasingly creamy texture and enough acidity to keep it lively. Green apple and citrus lead, with a gentle nuttiness from the oak integration that adds interest without dominating.
FinishClean and refreshing, fading with a little citrus peel bite.
Overall impressionAn easy-going, well-made Chardonnay that does exactly what it sets out to do.
Food Pairings
Along the Murray River, locals lean heavily on the river's own produce — think freshwater yabbies and Murray cod, both of which this Chardonnay handles with ease. Grilled barramundi with lemon butter is an obvious match, as is a simple prawn linguine or a creamy chicken and mushroom pie. The wine's gentle oak and citrus freshness also make it a fine companion to soft, mild cheeses from the region's small artisan dairies.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve well chilled at around 8-10°C to keep the acidity bright and the fruit fresh. No need to decant. A standard white wine tulip glass works well here, preserving the citrus aromatics without letting the wine warm too quickly in a wide bowl.
Trentham Estate's vineyards sit along the Murray River in northwest Victoria, where the warm continental climate and long sunny days push ripeness reliably each vintage. The sandy alluvial soils over clay subsoils drain freely, keeping vine stress in check and preserving natural acidity in the fruit. Irrigation from the Murray is essential here, and the cool nights help retain the freshness that defines the estate's white wines.
The Murray Darling region straddles the border of Victoria and New South Wales and is one of Australia's most productive wine regions by volume. It lacks the prestige of Barossa or Margaret River but delivers consistent, fruit-forward wines at accessible price points, with the Murray River providing both irrigation water and a moderating influence on the climate. Chardonnay here tends toward ripe stone fruit and citrus rather than the leaner, more mineral expressions of cooler Australian regions.
FAQs
What does this Chardonnay taste like?
Bright and fresh, with lemon zest, green apple, and a touch of white peach. A gentle oak influence adds a creamy texture without pushing the wine into heavily wooded territory. The finish is clean and refreshing.
When should I drink it?
Now is perfect. This is a wine made for near-term enjoyment, and it's drinking at its best in 2026. We'd recommend finishing any bottles you have by 2028 while the fruit is still lively.
What food should I pair it with?
Seafood is the natural match here — grilled prawns, barramundi, or a simple pasta with a creamy sauce all work brilliantly. It also holds its own alongside mild soft cheeses or a roast chicken with lemon and herbs.
How should I serve it?
Serve it well chilled, around 8-10°C. No need to decant — just pop it open, pour, and enjoy. A standard white wine tulip glass is ideal.
