Optimal drinking window: Now - 2027
Trentham Estate’s 2021 Merlot is a generous, easy-drinking red from the Murray Darling, with the warm 2021 vintage giving the fruit plenty of concentration. There’s ripe cherry and mulberry on the nose, followed by sweet plum, spice and a little mocha, with a savoury touch from French oak. Medium to full-bodied, but with the soft, velvety tannins you want from Merlot, finishing smooth and nicely rounded. The fruit was fermented on skins for seven days, with a portion matured in new and older French oak before blending.
A good one for the dinner table rather than a wine that needs much thought – try it with lamb chops, slow-cooked pork or a rich tomato-based pasta.
At five years old, this wine is already in its sweet spot. The fruit is generous and upfront, the tannins are as supple as they'll ever be, and there's no particular reason to wait.
Tasting Notes
AppearanceA clear, medium ruby with a bright, youthful rim.
NoseGenerous and immediately appealing, with ripe plum and dark cherry at the fore. A gentle warmth of baking spice and a faint vanilla note sit quietly in the background, likely from modest oak contact. It's open and inviting rather than brooding.
PalateSoft and round from the first sip, with the kind of plummy, berry-driven fruit that makes Merlot so crowd-pleasing. The tannins are gentle and well-integrated, and there's enough freshness to keep the wine from feeling heavy or flat. A touch of spice lingers mid-palate.
FinishClean and smooth, with a brief but pleasant fruit echo and no sharp edges.
Overall impressionExactly what it sets out to be: an easy, reliable Merlot that asks nothing of you except a glass and a meal.
Food Pairings
In the Murray Darling region, this kind of wine is made for unpretentious, generous eating. Think a Sunday roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, or a slow-cooked beef and red wine ragu over pappardelle. Locally, it would be poured without ceremony alongside a barbecued sausage and charred capsicum, or a simple cheeseburger straight off the grill. It's also perfectly at home with a hearty mushroom risotto for those who prefer to skip the meat.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve at around 16°C; any cooler and the fruit can close up, any warmer and the softness tips into flabbiness. No need to decant — this is ready to pour straight from the bottle. A standard red wine glass with a reasonably wide bowl will do the job well, allowing the ripe fruit to open up without ceremony.
Trentham Estate's vineyards sit along the Murray River in northwest Victoria, where long, warm days and cool nights help retain freshness in the fruit. The soils are predominantly sandy loam over clay, which drains well and encourages the vines to work for their water. This combination of heat and diurnal shift produces the ripe, generous fruit character that defines their Merlot, with enough natural acidity to keep things lively.
The Murray Darling region straddles the Victoria and New South Wales border along the Murray River, one of Australia's most productive wine corridors. It is warm-climate country, better known for volume than prestige, but growers who manage yields carefully can produce genuinely enjoyable, fruit-forward wines at accessible prices. The region has no grand classification system; its reputation rests on consistency and value rather than complexity.
FAQs
What does this wine taste like?
It's soft, round, and fruit-forward — ripe plum and dark cherry with a touch of spice and a smooth finish. The kind of Merlot that's immediately easy to enjoy without needing to think too hard about it.
When should I drink it?
Now is the right time. The fruit is generous and the tannins are as soft as they'll get.
What food works well with it?
It's genuinely versatile — pasta with a meaty ragu, roast lamb, grilled sausages, or a mushroom-based dish all work well. The soft tannins won't fight with food, which makes it a reliable go-to for the dinner table.
Do I need to decant it?
No. Pour it straight from the bottle into a standard red wine glass and let it breathe in the glass for ten minutes if you like. No ceremony needed.
