Les Mitans is one of Volnay's quieter premiers crus — not the fame of Caillerets or Champans, but those who know it love it for exactly that reason. Sitting on mid-slope clay and limestone, it produces Pinot Noir of real finesse: floral, precise, and with the kind of cool mineral backbone that sets Volnay apart from its richer neighbours to the north.
This 2025, in a generous three-litre format, has everything you'd want from the appellation and the format's natural advantage for long-term ageing.
Les Mitans sits on the middle slopes of Volnay at around 260-280 metres, where thin brown limestone soils over Bathonian and Bajocian bedrock provide excellent drainage and a strong mineral signature. The aspect is predominantly east-facing, tempering afternoon heat and preserving freshness and acidity in the fruit. This combination of lean soils and cool exposure is what gives Volnay its characteristic lightness of touch — perfumed and silky rather than broad and muscular.
Volnay is one of the Côte de Beaune's most celebrated red wine communes, producing exclusively Pinot Noir of remarkable elegance and aromatic lift. Its premiers crus account for the majority of the commune's best vineyards, with no grand cru but a cluster of highly regarded single sites. Compared to neighbouring Pommard, Volnay is consistently lighter in colour and body but rarely in complexity — the trade-off is all in favour of finesse and longevity. Les Mitans, while less talked about than Caillerets or Taillepieds, regularly produces wines of real poise and age-worthiness.
