Les Mitans sits in the heart of Volnay's premier cru hierarchy — not the most famous climat, but among the most quietly rewarding. The vineyard occupies mid-slope ground between the village and the Pommard border, producing wines with that characteristic Volnay combination of silkiness and spine.
The 2025 vintage, across Burgundy, delivered a season of relative freshness and precision after some warmer years — and for a site like Les Mitans, that's very good news indeed.
Les Mitans occupies the mid-slope of the Volnay appellation, at around 280 metres, on predominantly limestone and clay soils with good drainage. The aspect is east to southeast, giving the vines good morning sun while protecting them from afternoon heat — a key factor in preserving the freshness and floral character Volnay is known for. The mid-slope position offers a balance between the power of the upper limestone bedrock and the fuller, richer character that clay dominates lower down. The result is typically one of the more structured expressions in the Volnay premier cru hierarchy.
Volnay is one of the Côte de Beaune's most celebrated red wine communes, producing exclusively Pinot Noir under the village and premier cru designations. The appellation is prized for producing wines of extraordinary elegance and finesse — lighter in colour than Pommard to the north, more perfumed, and with a silkiness that distinguishes them from the weightier reds of the southern Côte. There are around 35 classified premier cru lieux-dits within Volnay, with Caillerets, Champans, and Clos des Ducs among the most celebrated, though Les Mitans consistently punches above its relative obscurity. The AOC rules require 100% Pinot Noir, with yields capped at 40 hl/ha for premier cru.
