Jane Eyre is one of Volnay's more intriguing addresses — a producer whose name raises eyebrows before the wine raises the bar. Les Mitans is a premier cru that sits at the heart of the appellation in every sense: a mid-slope lieu-dit with the kind of pale limestone soils that give Volnay its signature lift and silkiness.
The 2025 vintage arrives in magnum, which means this wine is already better dressed for the long haul than its standard-bottle sibling.
Les Mitans sits on the mid-slope of the Volnay hillside, where thin, stony soils over limestone bedrock give wines their characteristic lightness and aromatic lift. The elevation and easterly aspect help preserve acidity even in warmer years, while the limestone encourages the mineral tension that distinguishes Volnay from its weightier neighbour Pommard. The name 'Mitans' — meaning 'middles' in old Burgundian dialect — reflects its position between the higher and lower premier cru plots, drawing qualities from both.
Volnay is one of the Côte de Beaune's most elegant appellations, producing exclusively red wine from Pinot Noir on a steep limestone escarpment above the town. It has no grand cru, but its premiers crus — Les Caillerets, Champans, Taillepieds, and Mitans among them — are some of the most consistently thrilling in all of Burgundy. Compared to Pommard to the north, Volnay is lighter in body and more perfumed; compared to Meursault to the south, it is all red rather than white. Premier cru status here is a genuine mark of distinction, not just a designation.
