Yarra Yering is one of those names that demands a moment of respect. Founded by the late Dr Bailey Carrodus in 1969, it was among the first wineries to re-establish viticulture in the Yarra Valley, and it has never stopped making wines that feel genuinely sui generis. This Chardonnay is a half bottle, which means it will evolve a touch faster than its full-sized sibling — all the more reason to open it with purpose over a proper dinner rather than squirrel it away indefinitely.
The 2021 vintage in the Yarra was cool and precise, which shows here in spades: white peach and grapefruit with struck flint and a savoury, toasted-nut character from well-integrated oak. The palate is taut and focused, with real drive from the acidity and a mineral persistence that lingers long after the glass is empty.
What the critics say:
"While Yarra Yering makes its mark as a red wine producer of excellence, of late its chardonnay is really standing out. It's changing. It's finer. It's pristine, with layers of citrus and tangy acidity lengthening out a palate that's seamless and textural. It has the right amount of moreish sulphides to the fruit weight. Try putting this down."
"A full and layered white with sliced apples, lemon rind and honey character. It’s fresh and so flavorful. Terrific length. Drink now or hold."
The Yarra Yering vineyards sit on red loam over clay subsoils at around 150 metres elevation in the Upper Yarra Valley, one of Australia's cooler wine-producing zones. The maritime-influenced climate, tempered by altitude, delivers a long, slow ripening season that builds flavour without surrendering acidity. These conditions suit Chardonnay particularly well, producing fruit with natural tension and a mineral quality that sets the Yarra apart from warmer Australian regions.
The Yarra Valley is a GI (Geographical Indication) east of Melbourne in Victoria, widely regarded as one of Australia's finest cool-climate regions. It has no formal varietal restrictions, but it has built its reputation on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, styles that benefit from the cool, often fog-shrouded mornings and dry summers. The Upper Yarra, where Yarra Yering sits, is noticeably cooler and more Continental in character than the Lower Yarra closer to Melbourne.
The 2021 growing season in the Yarra Valley was defined by cool, drawn-out conditions that tested growers' patience but ultimately rewarded those who waited. A cold, wet spring pushed flowering late, reducing yields across the board, and the summer never really warmed up in the way the valley's warmer sites can coax out. The saving grace was a long, dry autumn that allowed fruit to hang and ripen slowly, building concentration without the panic of heat spikes. It is the kind of season that separates the careful from the careless.
The result is a vintage that leans into everything the Yarra does best: Pinot Noir with real definition and fine-grained structure, Chardonnay that is taut and precise rather than generous. These are not big, generous wines, and that is the point. They have the architecture to age. Most are drinking well now if you give them an hour in a decanter, but the better examples will reward patience until 2027 and beyond.
