Frerejean Frères

Frerejean Frères

Three Frerejean Taittinger brothers, Guillaume, Rodolphe and Richard, come from a long line of cannon-makers who supplied the French army back in the Napoleonic Wars. They also happen to be cousins to the Taittanger family who run the famous Champagne house. Having grown up cycling through the vineyards of the Côte des Blancs, they have deeply rooted knowledge of the grapes and the land in their home of Avize – a Grand Cru village of Champagne. Their first efforts at making Champagne was for their friends and family, but in 2005 they decided to make their passion an official business.

Frerejean Frères is all about respecting the land and letting the fruit sing. They have a low-chemical approach, including minimal pesticides and low sulphites. They also keep the sugar to a minimum. The grapes are a product of small parcels in Grand and Premier Cru vineyards, showcasing the best of the terroir. They utilise only the two most noble grape varieties – Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

The rules are as follows: all of their Champagne is turned by hand a few times a day as it ages, the Champagnes are disgorged late, spends extra time maturing in their cellars for a minimum of 5 years on the lees, and they all must age for between six to twelve years.

With standards like theirs it is no wonder that Jonathan Ray from Spectator declares that “they have come a long way in a short time and have had critics and connoisseurs alike in a complete swoon.” They are official Champagne supplier to the 2022 Michelin awards, served in all the swankiest of places like the London Dorchester Hotel, and are a true honour to have on our specially curated list of bubbly.

A new Champagne House to the UK but one that over the years has become a firm favourite on the continent, these brothers have embarked on a mission to revive some of the oldest traditions of Champagne and notably the sabrage. Witness our Wine Director Tom Harrow assist them as they tear about London lopping off bottle caps!
