Valdicava's Madonna del Piano Riserva is, quite simply, one of Brunello's benchmark wines. Produced only in the finest years from a single plot of old-vine Sangiovese Grosso on the estate's highest ground, the 2007 is a wine of remarkable poise: deeply coloured, aristocratically structured, and possessed of that particular Valdicava quality where power and finesse refuse to choose between themselves. Dark cherry, dried roses, and iron-rich earth give way to leather and dried herbs as it opens, the whole thing held together by tannins that feel carved rather than painted.

The 2007 vintage across Montalcino was long, warm, and slow-ripening - the kind of year that gives Sangiovese genuine depth without sacrificing its essential acidity. We'd open a bottle now with great pleasure, ideally after two hours in a decanter, but the wine will continue to reward patience until 2045 and quite possibly beyond.

What the critics say:

98/100James Suckling

"An impressively structured wine. Aromas of blueberries and blackberries with hints of violets. Full body with velvety, rich tannins. Very tannic and powerful, yet the tannins are polished and pretty. Layers of everything here. Give this another three to four years before opening."

96/100Antonio Galloni, Vinous

"The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is another super-finessed wine. Subtle floral notes meld into expressive red berries in a sumptuous Brunello that captures the essence of the vintage. The style is rich and deeply textured, but the 2007, as outstanding as it is, needs at least a few more years in bottle. Once again, finesse rules the day. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027."

OUR GROWERS

Valdicava

Valdicava is a small, fiercely quality-driven estate in the northern zone of Montalcino, run by Vincenzo Abbruzzese with a commitment to minimal intervention and maximum expression of place. The Madonna del Piano vineyard is the estate's crown jewel, a single parcel of old vines that produces one of the most sought-after Brunello Riservas in existence. Production is tiny, standards are uncompromising, and the wines consistently rank among the finest the appellation has to offer.
