Castello di Ama’s Al Poggio is a proper Tuscan Chardonnay, combining ripe fruit and a bit of richness with the freshness you want from a good white. From the high, clay-limestone slopes of Gaiole in Chianti, where Chardonnay has been grown since the early 1980s, it’s a wine that shows just how well the variety can work in Tuscany.
Around 40% of the wine ferments in oak, with the rest in stainless steel; the oak portion then spends around eight months on its lees, with regular bâtonnage. That brings a little creaminess and texture, but the wine stays fresh, with a mineral edge and a long, savoury finish.
Lovely with roast chicken, turkey, richer fish dishes or a creamy mushroom risotto. A versatile bottle for the table, and a good reminder that Tuscany isn't just about reds.
What the critics say:
"The Castello di Ama 2025 Chardonnay Al Poggio is bright and taut, with a good sense of balance that should not be underestimated with this variety. Crisp apple and green pear are followed by clean honeyed tones, acacia flower and a much-needed mineral quality that gives the wine definition and lift. Very nice, crisp and fresh, it maintains good tension throughout. The wine sees both stainless steel and barrique, with 10,000 bottles made."
"Very clean and restrained, offering sliced peaches and apples with raw almonds, crushed stones and just a touch of honeysuckle. Medium-bodied, extremely fresh and layered, with a silky texture. Delicate and attractive. Drink or hold."
The vineyards sit at altitude, around 450 to 500 metres in the hills near Gaiole in Chianti, where cool nights preserve acidity even through hot Tuscan summers. Soils here are the classic galestro and alberese, a crumbly, mineral-rich clay-limestone mix that drains well and stresses the vines just enough to concentrate flavour without losing elegance.
Tuscany’s 2025 vintage looks promising for white wines, with early signs pointing towards ripe fruit, good concentration and freshness where growers got the picking date right. It was a year of contrasting conditions rather than straightforward sunshine: a wet winter and spring helped replenish water reserves, summer heat accelerated ripening, and scattered hail and late-season rain added complications in some areas.
