San Lorenzo is the vineyard that put Castello di Ama on the map decades before Gran Selezione existed as a category, and this bottling remains the estate's most precise expression of Sangiovese grown high in the hills above Gaiole.
The 2022 is all nerve and perfume: Ama has never chased power, preferring instead the kind of tension that makes you lean in rather than sit back.
What the critics say:
"Aromas of al dente fruit, sandalwood, violets and roses follow through to a precise palate of dark cherries. Medium-bodied and subtle, with very fine tannins that are elegant and vivid. Like grand cru Burgundy, in essence. Available in March 2026. Drink on release or hold."
"One of three top-shelf expressions from Castello di Ama, the 2022 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo is mostly Sangiovese (up to 80%, with smaller parts Merlot and Malvasia Nera). It represents a selection of the best fruit sourced from across various plots. What stands out here is the excellent ripeness of the fruit, with blackcurrant and cherry. The wine reveals just a hint of cinnamon or nutmeg from the grape skins. It is balanced and level, tucked in at the right places and exuberant in others. You get good freshness and lasting elegance. This is a memorable vintage of San Lorenzo."
San Lorenzo sits at around 500 metres in the Conca d'Oro amphitheatre near Gaiole in Chianti, one of the coolest and highest pockets of Chianti Classico. The soils are a mix of galestro and alberese, friable schist and limestone that drain well and force the vines to struggle, concentrating flavour rather than yield. The altitude brings significant diurnal swings, preserving the acidity that gives this wine its lift and keeping alcohol in check despite a warm Tuscan summer.
Chianti Classico Gran Selezione sits at the top of the Chianti Classico pyramid, introduced in 2014 to recognise single-vineyard or estate-grown wines of greater ageing potential than standard Riserva. Rules demand a minimum of 30 months' ageing and fruit sourced only from the producer's own vineyards, a deliberate move to reward quality over volume. Compared to its Riserva and base Chianti Classico siblings, Gran Selezione is built for patience rather than immediate charm, and San Lorenzo is widely considered one of the category's benchmark wines.
