San Lorenzo is the vineyard that put Castello di Ama on the map decades before Gran Selezione existed as a category, and this bottling remains the estate's most precise expression of Sangiovese grown high in the hills above Gaiole.
The 2022 is all nerve and perfume: Ama has never chased power, preferring instead the kind of tension that makes you lean in rather than sit back.
What the critics say:
"Aromas of al dente fruit, sandalwood, violets and roses follow through to a precise palate of dark cherries. Medium-bodied and subtle, with very fine tannins that are elegant and vivid. Like grand cru Burgundy, in essence. Available in March 2026. Drink on release or hold."
"One of three top-shelf expressions from Castello di Ama, the 2022 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo is mostly Sangiovese (up to 80%, with smaller parts Merlot and Malvasia Nera). It represents a selection of the best fruit sourced from across various plots. What stands out here is the excellent ripeness of the fruit, with blackcurrant and cherry. The wine reveals just a hint of cinnamon or nutmeg from the grape skins. It is balanced and level, tucked in at the right places and exuberant in others. You get good freshness and lasting elegance. This is a memorable vintage of San Lorenzo."
The San Lorenzo vineyard sits at altitude around Gaiole in Chianti, one of the cooler, higher pockets of the Classico zone, where galestro and alberese soils drain fast and reflect heat back into the canopy during the day while nights stay crisp. That diurnal swing preserves acidity and perfume in the Sangiovese, giving the wine its lift and savoury edge rather than sheer weight. Organic farming across the estate keeps yields honest and the fruit expressive of this specific hillside.
Chianti Classico Gran Selezione was created in 2014 as the pinnacle of the zone, sitting above Chianti Classico and Chianti Classico Riserva, with stricter yields, longer ageing requirements, and fruit that must come from a single estate or vineyard. It is meant to showcase the upper limit of what Sangiovese can do in this historic zone between Florence and Siena, distinct from the broader, often simpler wines carrying just the Chianti Classico name. Producers like Castello di Ama helped define what this tier should mean in practice, long before the classification existed on paper.
