Chassagne-Montrachet is a village built its reputation on white wine, which makes its red Premier Crus something of an insider's secret — and Morgeot, the largest and arguably most serious of its vineyards, makes the case better than most.
Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard, run with real precision by the next generation of a family already steeped in Chassagne lore, coaxes something genuinely savoury and structured from this red-soil pocket of the appellation. This is Pinot Noir with more grip and earth than perfume, built on firm, fine tannins. A bottle for those who think Chassagne is only about Chardonnay - it is a really rather persuasive rebuttal.
