Château Angélus stands as one of Saint-Émilion's most prestigious estates, a Premier Grand Cru Classé A that has redefined what Right Bank Bordeaux can achieve. On their south-facing limestone and clay slopes, Merlot and Cabernet Franc ripen to perfection under the watchful eye of the de Boüard de Laforest family.
What the critics say:
"Dark ruby-garnet, opaque core, violet highlights, delicate lightening at the rim. Delicate red berry notes, a hint of cranberries, fresh red cherry fruit, a pleasant hint of herbal spice, subtle notes of fine wood. Juicy, elegant, red cherries again, fine, mature tannins, finely structured, salty finish, mineral and long-lasting, heart cherries on the finish, definite aging potential, very elegant, approachable style."
Angélus sits on Saint-Émilion's prized limestone plateau and south-facing côtes, with vineyards at 70-100 metres elevation. The limestone bedrock provides excellent drainage whilst retaining moisture, creating ideal conditions for Merlot to develop concentration and complexity. Clay pockets scattered throughout the vineyard add structure and mineral backbone. This terroir combination produces wines with both the richness expected from great Saint-Émilion and the mineral tension that ensures longevity.
Saint-Émilion Grand Cru represents the pinnacle of Right Bank Bordeaux, where Merlot reigns supreme over the limestone plateau and côtes. The appellation's classification system, unique among Bordeaux regions, is reviewed every decade, creating intense competition among estates. Unlike the Médoc's emphasis on Cabernet Sauvignon, Saint-Émilion celebrates Merlot's ability to express limestone terroir with both power and finesse. The Premier Grand Cru Classé A status, held by only four estates including Angélus, represents the absolute elite of this historic region.
The 2025 Bordeaux vintage emerged from one of the most demanding growing seasons in recent memory — the earliest budbreak since 1989, June temperatures second only to 2003 since records began, and an unusually early harvest beginning in August for the whites. Conditions that should have produced heavy, overripe wines. They didn't. Decanter's Georgie Hindle, who tasted close to 200 wines ahead of the formal campaign, describes "exceptional concentration, aromatic purity and a freshness that contradicts the record-breaking heat.
The early critical consensus places 2025 stylistically between the precision of 2020 and the structure of 2016, with the brightness of 2023 — a combination that suggests a very serious vintage indeed. Yields are dramatically low, the smallest crop since 1991, with production across the Gironde running around 15% below the five-year average. The quality is here. There simply isn't very much of it.
