Grand-Puy-Lacoste sits amongst Pauillac's finest, producing wines that capture everything we love about Left Bank Bordeaux without the hysteria of the first growths. The Borie family has guided this fifth growth since 1978, crafting wines that are serious but not stern, structured but never austere.
Since 2020, Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste has released a small number of exquisitely presented large-format cases each year, featuring four bottles, two magnums and a double magnum — an impressive total of 900cl. Striking and rare, these cases make a truly memorable gift and a wonderful way to mark an outstanding Bordeaux vintage, appealing equally to collectors and devoted wine lovers.
What the critics say:
"Deep dark ruby garnet, opaque core, violet reflections, delicate edge brightening. Fresh, ripe heart cherries, a hint of cassis and blackberry confit, a hint of mandarin zest, red berry nuances underneath, floral touch. Juicy, lively, red forest berry confit, fine tannins, mineral-salty, an elegant, well adhering food companion, delicate and long lasting."
"Excellent GPL, medium- to full-bodied with a great expression of dark fruit that is evenly distributed. It’s fresh and precise with grainy, integrated tannins that should only integrate more. A blend of 76% cabernet sauvignon and 24% merlot."
The vineyards sprawl across the Bages plateau, benefiting from deep Günzian gravel beds over limestone and clay subsoils that provide both drainage and water retention. At 20 metres elevation, the vines catch every breeze from the Gironde estuary, moderating temperatures and extending the growing season. This classic Pauillac terroir, shared with Lafite and Mouton, gives the wines their characteristic power tempered by mineral precision. The gravelly soils warm early, encouraging ripeness in Cabernet Sauvignon whilst the clay beneath ensures the vines never suffer from drought stress.
Pauillac sits at the heart of the Médoc's aristocracy, home to three of the five first growths and a clutch of exceptional châteaux like Grand-Puy-Lacoste. The commune's deep gravel plateaux and proximity to the Gironde create ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, resulting in wines of remarkable power and longevity. Whilst Saint-Julien charms with elegance and Saint-Estèphe impresses with structure, Pauillac delivers both in spades, producing wines that define what great Bordeaux should taste like. The appellation's strict regulations ensure only the finest fruit makes it into the bottle, maintaining standards that have made Pauillac synonymous with excellence.
The 2025 Bordeaux vintage emerged from one of the most demanding growing seasons in recent memory — the earliest budbreak since 1989, June temperatures second only to 2003 since records began, and an unusually early harvest beginning in August for the whites. Conditions that should have produced heavy, overripe wines. They didn't. Decanter's Georgie Hindle, who tasted close to 200 wines ahead of the formal campaign, describes "exceptional concentration, aromatic purity and a freshness that contradicts the record-breaking heat.
The early critical consensus places 2025 stylistically between the precision of 2020 and the structure of 2016, with the brightness of 2023 — a combination that suggests a very serious vintage indeed. Yields are dramatically low, the smallest crop since 1991, with production across the Gironde running around 15% below the five-year average. The quality is here. There simply isn't very much of it.
