The white sibling to one of Bordeaux's most legendary reds, Haut-Brion Blanc comes from just 2.7 hectares in Pessac-Léognan and represents the absolute pinnacle of white Bordeaux.
What the critics say:
"The brightness and intensity are really impressive, with aromas of sliced pears, lemons, minerals and hints of crushed stones and salt. Energetic and lively. A blend of 53% sauvignon blanc and 47% semillon."
"Light greenish yellow, silver reflections. Delicate wood spice, meadow herbs, gooseberries, white currants, some vanilla, multi-faceted, inviting bouquet. Complex, powerful, yellow peach, saline texture, spicy on the finish, fine extract sweetness in the aftertaste, ripe mango on the finish, white pepper on the finish, a full-bodied companion at the table, secure ageing potential."
The white vineyard sits on the same remarkable terroir as the red: deep Günz gravel beds over clay subsoil in the heart of Pessac-Léognan. This warm, well-draining gravel reflects heat back to the vines whilst the clay beneath provides water retention during dry spells. The urban microclimate of Bordeaux city nearby creates slightly warmer conditions than surrounding areas, helping achieve perfect ripeness whilst maintaining the acidity that gives these wines their legendary ageability. The soil's complexity translates directly into the wine's mineral depth and textural sophistication.
Pessac-Léognan was carved out of the larger Graves appellation in 1987 to recognise its superior terroir and history of great wines. The appellation encompasses ten communes south of Bordeaux city and includes all of Graves' classified growths. For white wines, the blend must be primarily Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, though Muscadelle is permitted in small quantities. The gravelly soils here produce whites of exceptional complexity and longevity, quite different from the Loire's expression of Sauvignon Blanc or Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines.
The 2025 Bordeaux vintage emerged from one of the most demanding growing seasons in recent memory — the earliest budbreak since 1989, June temperatures second only to 2003 since records began, and an unusually early harvest beginning in August for the whites. Conditions that should have produced heavy, overripe wines. They didn't. Decanter's Georgie Hindle, who tasted close to 200 wines ahead of the formal campaign, describes "exceptional concentration, aromatic purity and a freshness that contradicts the record-breaking heat.
The early critical consensus places 2025 stylistically between the precision of 2020 and the structure of 2016, with the brightness of 2023 — a combination that suggests a very serious vintage indeed. Yields are dramatically low, the smallest crop since 1991, with production across the Gironde running around 15% below the five-year average. The quality is here. There simply isn't very much of it.
