La Mission Haut-Brion is Haut-Brion's near-neighbour and, in certain vintages, its equal — a wine that divides opinion not because it lacks quality but because it refuses to be straightforward about it. Where Haut-Brion seduces, La Mission broods.
The 2021 is very much in that tradition: a Pessac-Léognan of real density and serious structure, built on Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot softening the frame, and the estate's signature quality — a smoky, almost mineral iron-and-earth character — running through the whole thing like a spine.
What the critics say:
"Plenty of classic La Mission finesse and balance, touches of cloves and velvety tannins, this is surpremely balanced and elegant, with pummice stone minerality. It is a little taut on the finish in its tannic structure and no question majors more heavily on the cool blue fruit character than we have seen with this property in recent years. Seriously enjoyable, a total masterclass in cool climate fruit delivery. Easy to recommend. 73% new oak, harvest september 20 to October 8. No frost impact here and very little mildew, meaning the overall yield was up to 47hl/h, extremely generous for the vintage."
"Blackcurrants and graphite aromas follow through to a medium body with very fine tannins and a savory finish. Fluid, with a subtle and open character. Stone and dust at the end. So drinkable now but will improve with age."
La Mission sits in Pessac-Léognan on the Left Bank, its vineyards almost touching those of Haut-Brion in what is now effectively suburban Bordeaux. The soils are the defining feature: deep Günzian gravel over clay and sand, draining freely and retaining heat, which gives the wines their density and that distinctive smoky, mineral quality that separates Pessac-Léognan from the rest of the Graves. The urban setting, counterintuitively, moderates temperature extremes — the surrounding buildings act as a heat sink, extending the ripening season and protecting against late frost.
Pessac-Léognan was carved out of the wider Graves appellation in 1987 specifically to recognise the quality of the communes closest to Bordeaux, including the five Classed Growths whose classification predates the more famous 1855 Médoc ranking by two years. The appellation permits both red and dry white wines, and is the only Left Bank AOC where white Graves can genuinely rival red in prestige. Compared to the Médoc, the wines here tend to show more earthy, mineral, almost smoky character alongside the fruit — a reflection of the gravelly soils and the proximity to the city.
The 2021 growing season in Bordeaux delivered one of those vintages that separates the wheat from the chaff. Spring frost in April walloped many vineyards, particularly on the Right Bank, slashing potential yields before the season properly began. A sodden start gave way to a blistering summer that pushed ripening forward, then September rains arrived just as harvest decisions loomed. The producers who survived the frost and timed their picking with surgical precision crafted wines of real character, whilst others found themselves wrestling with dilution or struggling with reduced volumes.
What emerged from this gauntlet is a vintage of surprising charm, though decidedly not a blockbuster year. The Merlot-based Right Bank wines show particular finesse where frost damage was minimal, with a silky texture that makes them uncommonly approachable young. Left Bank Cabernet Sauvignon fared better through the challenging weather, producing wines with good structure but less of the power you might expect from recent years. We find ourselves reaching for these 2021s now rather than cellaring them for decades—they're drinking beautifully with a few years on them and should hit their stride over the next decade.
