Nemora is Mazzei's newest love letter to Sangiovese grown somewhere a little cooler and wilder than the family's famous Chianti Classico heartland at Fonterutoli.
The name means 'of the woods' in Latin, and it's an apt one: this is a fresher, more perfumed expression of the grape, picked early to keep the energy intact rather than chase ripeness for its own sake.
What the critics say:
"A fresh and crisp new wine from the beautiful vineyard of Ipsus in Chianti Classico near the town of Castellina. It’s medium-bodied, with a light, open-grained tannic texture and a soft, creamy mouthfeel. The cherry and flowers come through nicely. Partial whole cluster fermentations and aging in ceramic vats give this attractive drinkability. Drink now."
Nemora draws on vineyards chosen specifically for their cooler mesoclimates, higher altitude parcels where Sangiovese ripens slower and holds onto its acidity. Galestro and alberese soils, the same friable, mineral-rich clay and limestone that define much of Chianti, lend the wine its savoury backbone and lifted perfume rather than sheer weight.
This is a Toscana IGT rather than Chianti Classico, a deliberate choice that frees Mazzei from the blending rules and oak requirements of the stricter DOCG. It allows the wine to be built purely around freshness and drinkability, a lighter-touch counterpoint to the estate's more serious, age-worthy bottlings.
The 2024 growing season in Tuscany was defined by a cool, wet spring followed by a summer that never quite committed to the heat Sangiovese craves — periodic rain events through the summer kept growers watchful and selective work in the vineyard essential. Those who managed canopies well and harvested at the right moment came out ahead; those who hesitated paid for it. It was a vintage that rewarded attentiveness rather than simply good fortune, and the best producers — particularly in Chianti Classico and Montalcino — rose to that challenge.
What landed in the cellar was fresher and more lifted than the riper, more muscular style that warmer years like 2022 tend to produce. Sangiovese shows bright acidity and firm structure with real energy behind it — less about sheer density, more about definition and length. It is too early to draw firm conclusions on the very best Brunello and Riserva releases, which will need time to resolve, but the Rosso and Chianti-level wines are already drinking well and offering genuine pleasure without demanding patience.
