Optimal drinking window: 2026 - 2038
We think Alain Chavy might be Puligny's best-kept secret, which is saying something in a village where every grower seems to have a cult following. This Les Charmes from 2020 shows exactly why we're such fans: it's everything you want from premier cru Puligny without the ego or the price tag that usually comes with it.
The Chavy family have been farming these slopes since the 1970s, working organically long before it was fashionable, and their Les Charmes sits perfectly between the power of Meursault and the tension of Chassagne.
This 2020 is drinking beautifully now, having moved beyond its initial primary fruit phase into more complex secondary territory. Over the next five years, expect the mineral elements to become even more pronounced whilst the fruit integrates further with the oak. The wine should plateau around 2030-2035, showing maximum complexity, before beginning a graceful decline where the acidity will keep it fresh even as the fruit starts to fade. By 2038, it will still be drinking well but the youthful vibrancy will have given way to more tertiary, honeyed characteristics.
Tasting Notes
AppearancePale gold with green highlights and brilliant clarity.
NoseWhite peach and citrus zest open first, followed by toasted hazelnuts and a whisper of vanilla from quality oak. There's something distinctly chalky underneath, like wet limestone after rain, that speaks directly to the terroir.
PalateMedium-bodied with lovely tension between ripe fruit and mineral backbone. Lemon curd and white flowers dance with subtle spice, whilst the texture builds from crisp entry to a more generous, almost creamy mid-palate. The acidity keeps everything fresh and focused.
FinishLong and mineral-driven, with lingering citrus and that distinctive Puligny chalkiness that seems to go on forever.
Overall impressionThis is premier cru Puligny as it should be: precise, elegant, and utterly compelling.
Food Pairings
In Burgundy, Les Charmes would traditionally accompany the region's famous poulet de Bresse, either simply roasted with herbs or in a cream sauce with morel mushrooms. Local chefs also pair premier cru Puligny with escargots de Bourgogne swimming in garlic and parsley butter, where the wine's mineral backbone cuts through the richness beautifully. Pike-perch from the Saône, served with a classic beurre blanc, represents another classic marriage, whilst the local Chaource cheese provides a perfect ending to any meal.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve at 11-12°C in large Burgundy bowls that allow the aromatics to develop properly. No need to decant, but do open 30 minutes before serving to let the wine breathe and show its full complexity. If the wine seems tight on opening, a gentle swirl in the glass will help coax out those secondary flavours.
Les Charmes sits mid-slope on Puligny's eastern edge, where limestone-rich soils meet a seam of clay that provides both drainage and water retention. The vineyard faces southeast, catching morning sun whilst avoiding the harsh afternoon heat, and the thin topsoil over bedrock forces roots deep into the chalky substratum. This combination of exposure and geology creates wines with mineral tension balanced by generous fruit,典型 of premier cru Puligny at its most expressive.
Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru represents some of Burgundy's most sought-after white wine real estate, sitting between Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet on the Côte de Beaune's golden slope. The appellation includes 17 premier cru climats, each with distinct character shaped by subtle variations in soil and exposure. Les Charmes is among the more accessible premier crus, offering classic Puligny elegance without the stratospheric prices of Le Montrachet itself, making it a favourite among those who understand that great Burgundy doesn't always require a second mortgage.
We'll be honest: 2020 in Burgundy was a vintage that kept everyone on their toes. A warm, dry spring brought early budbreak, then summer turned properly scorching with temperatures hitting 40°C in August. The saving grace came from perfectly timed August rains that rescued the vines from serious drought stress, followed by ideal September weather that allowed for unhurried picking. Yields were mercifully normal after several years of frost-ravaged harvests, and crucially, the heat never tipped into the jammy territory that can plague warmer vintages here.
What emerged were wines with surprising freshness despite the heat, showing ripe fruit balanced by good acidity and lovely mineral precision. The reds have more immediate charm than the structured 2019s, with silky tannins and generous Pinot Noir character, whilst the whites display beautiful richness without losing that crystalline Burgundian tension we adore. This isn't a legendary vintage like 2005 or 2010, but it's thoroughly delicious and more approachable in youth than many Burgundy vintages. The village wines are drinking beautifully now, Premier Crus are just hitting their stride, and the Grands Crus will reward patience for another five to ten years.
