Shed 530 Estate is a small, independently minded producer making Chardonnay in a style that sits squarely in the riper, rounder camp — pear and citrus fruit with a gentle touch of oak giving the wine its creamy, approachable character. There's enough freshness here to keep things lively, but this is firmly a wine built for pleasure rather than patience. Drink it now while that fruit is at its most generous.

It's a versatile bottle — equally at home alongside grilled seafood, a simple roast chicken, or a well-stocked cheeseboard.

This is a wine that is drinking well right now. The fruit is generous and the oak is nicely folded in — there's no particular reason to wait.

Tasting Notes

AppearancePale gold with a faint green tint and good clarity.

NoseRipe pear and citrus peel lead, with a soft vanilla undertone from the oak. There's a rounded, almost honeyed quality that makes it immediately inviting.

PalateCreamy in texture with the fruit — pear, a little peach, and lemon zest — carrying nicely through the mid-palate. The oak is well-integrated rather than dominant, and the acidity keeps it from feeling heavy.

FinishClean and smooth, fading with a pleasant citrus lift.

Overall impressionA crowd-pleasing, well-balanced Chardonnay that delivers exactly what it promises.

FAQs

What does this Chardonnay taste like?

Ripe pear and citrus with a soft, creamy texture from gentle oak ageing. Fresh acidity keeps it lively rather than heavy — it's an easy-drinking, approachable style with broad appeal.

When should I drink this wine?

It's drinking well right now and we'd aim to finish it by 2028. This isn't a wine that will gain much from cellaring — the fruit is the point, and that won't get better with age.

What food goes well with it?

Grilled or pan-fried seafood is a natural match, as is roast chicken. The creamy texture also works well with lightly sauced pasta dishes or a soft, washed-rind cheese.

How should I serve it?

Serve at 10-12°C. No need to decant — just open and pour. A standard tulip-shaped white wine glass is ideal.

Is this wine worth cellaring?

Not particularly. It's built for near-term pleasure rather than long-term development. Drink it while the fruit is at its best, ideally within the next two years.

OUR GROWERS

Shed 530 Estate

Shed 530 Estate is a relatively young name in Hawke’s Bay, based at 530 Puketapu Road near Hastings, with vineyards stretching across some of the region’s more interesting sites. The estate sits in the Dartmoor Valley and makes wines from its own vineyards as well as fruit from sites including Gimblett Gravels, Havelock Hills and the Dartmoor Valley. The focus is very Hawke’s Bay: full-bodied Bordeaux-style reds, Syrah and rich, structured Chardonnay.
