Shed 530 Estate is a relatively young name in Hawke’s Bay, based at 530 Puketapu Road near Hastings, with vineyards stretching across some of the region’s more interesting sites. The estate sits in the Dartmoor Valley and makes wines from its own vineyards as well as fruit from sites including Gimblett Gravels, Havelock Hills and the Dartmoor Valley. The focus is very Hawke’s Bay: full-bodied Bordeaux-style reds, Syrah and rich, structured Chardonnay.

At the winemaking helm is Kel Dixon, who joined as Chief Winemaker in 2022. A Hawke’s Bay local, Dixon has more than 30 vintages behind him, working not only in Hawke’s Bay but also Marlborough, Canterbury and the South of France. His approach is fairly hands-off, with minimal intervention in the winery and an emphasis on preserving the character of each vineyard.

There’s an interesting story behind the place, too. The estate was devastated by Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023, just weeks after opening, with the winery, cellar door and vines badly affected. The team rebuilt and reopened, turning Shed 530 into more than just a winery: it now has a bistro, cellar door and outdoor space, with the emphasis very much on wine, food and relaxed Hawke’s Bay hospitality.

For a relatively new estate, it has already made a mark. Its wines include the MUTU range, and its Reserve Chardonnay 2021 won a Platinum Medal and 97 points at the Decanter World Wine Awards.
