Optimal drinking window: Now - 2030

Shed 530 Estate's Reserve blend puts Merlot in the lead, with Malbec adding ink and flesh and Cabernet bringing the structural backbone. The 2020 vintage delivers what you'd hope for from this combination: dark fruit — plum, blackberry, a suggestion of dark chocolate — with enough tannin to give it shape without austerity. It's a generously proportioned red, built for the table rather than the cellar.

We'd open this with something off the grill and not think twice about it.

At six years old, the 2020 is in a comfortable, approachable place — primary dark fruit is still very much front and centre, and the tannins have rounded off without losing their grip. Over the next two to three years, the chocolate and spice elements may knit more tightly into the fruit, adding a little extra dimension. We wouldn't expect dramatic transformation; this is a drink-well wine rather than a develop-for-decades one. Peak drinking is probably now until 2028.

Tasting Notes

AppearanceDeep ruby-purple, dense at the core and clear at the rim.

NoseDark plum and blackberry upfront, with a gentle thread of dark chocolate and baking spice. There's a warmth to it — ripe and inviting without being jammy.

PalateMedium-to-full bodied, with the Merlot's softness doing most of the work early on. Malbec adds a velvety mid-palate richness, while Cabernet keeps things honest with firm, well-integrated tannins and a touch of cassis.

FinishLong and gently spiced, with dark fruit fading cleanly rather than dropping off a cliff.

Overall impressionA crowd-pleasing Reserve blend that earns its label — generous, structured, and genuinely good with food.

FAQs

What does this wine taste like?

Dark plum, blackberry, and a touch of chocolate with a warm spice finish. The tannins are firm but not stern, and the whole thing has a generous, rounded feel that makes it very easy to drink with food.

When should I drink this wine?

It's ready now and drinking well. We'd enjoy it any time between now and 2030, with no real benefit to holding it much longer than that.

What food works well with this blend?

Grilled meats are the obvious match — ribeye, lamb chops, or a proper burger. It would also do very well with slow-cooked beef, a hearty pasta with ragù, or strong hard cheeses.

Do I need to decant it?

Not essential, but a 30-minute decant does open it up and softens the tannins slightly. If you're short on time, a large glass and a good swirl will do the job.

Is this worth cellaring?

It's not built for long ageing. This is a wine designed for pleasure now, and it delivers exactly that. Hold it until 2028 if you like, but there's no compelling reason to wait.

OUR GROWERS

Shed 530 Estate

Shed 530 Estate is a relatively young name in Hawke’s Bay, based at 530 Puketapu Road near Hastings, with vineyards stretching across some of the region’s more interesting sites. The estate sits in the Dartmoor Valley and makes wines from its own vineyards as well as fruit from sites including Gimblett Gravels, Havelock Hills and the Dartmoor Valley. The focus is very Hawke’s Bay: full-bodied Bordeaux-style reds, Syrah and rich, structured Chardonnay.
