One of Tuscany’s most famous estates and the first Brunello to join the Bordeaux-based negociant system of La Place, Poggio Antico occupies an enviable spot to the south of Montalcino. The vineyard is one of the highest in Montalcino at 480m above sea level, and this allied to the cooling coastal breeze means the fruit always retains its characteristic freshness and vivacity during the warm Italian summers. Poggio Antico is also one of Tuscany’s most beautiful sites, with fabulous views all the way to the Tyrrhenian Sea on a clear day!
The Wine
Poggio Antico make a cracking estate Brunello that always emphasises the elegant side to Sangiovese. The Riserva is also brilliant, whilst in 2019 they introduced the Vigna I Poggi, a single vineyard selection from a parcel at 550 metres above sea level.
