Lady May is Glenelly’s flagship wine, and it really shows what the estate is all about. It’s elegant but full of character, with layers of cassis, blackcurrant, dark cherry, and a little graphite, lifted by spicy plum notes. There’s plenty of freshness and vibrancy here, balanced by velvety tannins and a structure that means it can age beautifully for well over a decade.
The story behind the estate is just as compelling. May-Éliane de Lencquesaing, once the owner of Pauillac’s Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, brought her Bordeaux heritage and passion to Stellenbosch. With winemaker Luke O’Cuinneagain leading the way, Glenelly produces wines that carry Bordeaux’s precision and structure but with the generosity and richness of the Cape.
What the critics say:
"Right up there with the best Stellenbosch Bordeaux-style blends from the exceptional 2017 vintage, this is a distinguished, patrician wine where everything is in place: tannins, acidity, oak and fruit concentration. Marrying Cabernet Sauvignon with 10% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it has iodine and mint aromas, red berry and cassis flavours, subtle vanilla spice and impressive underlying structure. A red to cellar."
