With 99 points, the trailblazing L’Apparita 2020 is Antonio Galloni’s stand-alone 2nd highest rated Italian wine of the vintage which, he says, “will soon take its place among the great Apparitas” and “spectacular… captures all the best the vintage had to offer”.

L’Apparita is 100% Merlot farmed from two tiny parcels at the top of the Bellavista estate. Typically, such a prime site would have been reserved to produce an estate’s finest Sangiovese but it shows the foresight of winemaker Marco Pallanti to plant Merlot instead. With soil rich in the same mineral-packed blue clay that is responsible for the very best wines of Pomerol, it is also Tuscany’s most venerable 100% Merlot, the first vintage produced two years before the revered Masseto, which it has outscored in 2018, 2019 and 2020 at a third the price. Typically, a little over 1000 cases are produced per annum but 2020 was a more generous vintage and so we have been able to request a special syndicate allocation.
