The 2016 Badia a Passignano Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is a textbook Gran Selezione: fragrant with ripe cherries, violets, and herbs, layered with dark fruit, leather, and spice. Elegant yet structured, with vibrant acidity and fine tannins, it offers both immediate appeal and impressive aging potential.

This is the only Chianti made by Marchesi Antinori entirely from 100% Sangiovese. Sourced from the family’s 53 hectares surrounding the Badia a Passignano abbey in Sambuca Val di Pesa, just south of Tenuta Tignanello, only the finest grapes are selected. The wine is then aged in Hungarian oak barrels in the abbey’s underground cellars, where the cool, stable conditions allow for long, graceful maturation.

The abbey itself has deep roots in Tuscan wine history. Records in the Florence State Archives confirm Sangiovese cultivation here centuries ago, and in 1983 a millennia-old Vitis vinifera vine was unearthed in its soils—evidence of the site’s ancient legacy.

"One of the many highlights in this range, the 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badia a Passignano is the most refined, elegant wine Antinori has made from their Badia a Passignano property. Medium in body and lithe, but with plenty of the fruit intensity that is typical of this site, the 2016 Badia captures a striking middle ground of richness and finesse that is captivating. Lavender, mint, blue/purplish fruit and licorice are all beautifully delineated. The gradual move towards less concentration in the cellar and larger 300 and 500-liter barrels has paid off handsomely. This is such a gorgeous Chianti Classico."
