Almaviva EPU is the little brother to Chile’s great icon wine, Almaviva, but don’t let that fool you; this is a polished, serious red in its own right. “EPU” means “two” in the Mapuche language, reflecting both its role as the estate’s second wine and its close kinship to the grand vin.
The blend leans on Cabernet Sauvignon for backbone and structure, rounded out with Carménère, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc to bring spice, plush fruit, and elegance. Essentially, EPU gives you a taste of Almaviva’s pedigree and style in a more approachable, earlier-drinking package, but still with that hallmark poise and finesse.
What the critics say:
"This is a little fruitier and more vibrant than previous vintages, with sweet berries, cassis, fine herbs and roasted white sesame seeds on the nose. Fine tannins with sweet berries and a very smooth, refined finish. A medium-bodied, approachable, balanced Epu from a hot vintage. 10% new barrels. Already very approachable, but will age nicely in the next few years. Drink or hold."
"The 2023 Blend EPU comes from Maipo. Deep garnet in hue, it delivers ripe fruit aromas of blackberry, dried plum, a touch of cassis and violet. Rich and voluminous, with plush tannins and a hint of talc, the palate is juicy and enveloping. Its freshness balances the mature profile. 14.5% alcohol."
