This wine has become a massive hit with club members over a string of super vintages, and with the 2011 being classified by the Rioja DOCa as ‘excellent’ (like the stellar 2010), the results are again extremely impressive.
The growing season was marked by high temperatures and 25% below average rainfall, so not entirely smooth sailing, though the notes and scores for this release confirm that the expert team at López de Heredia know exactly how to navigate their regional challenges. Careful monitoring of the vines led to early picking of the Tempranillo fruit in late September followed by Graciano and Mazuelo a whole week later.
These wines are up there with some of the best value, age-worthy reds around, and with the estate having done much of the maturation for you, I would recommend a case for the cellar and one for the rack… and some magnums for weekends!
