A family winery with roots dating back to 1859 in Piedmont's Langhe district, holds a significant place in Italian winemaking history. Angelo Gaja, who joined the company in 1961, is credited with pioneering techniques that have transformed winemaking in Italy. His visionary approach and dedication to quality have earned him the title of Italy's most famous wine pioneer. While the headquarters remain in Barbaresco, Gaja now produces 18 different wines from vineyards across Piedmont and Tuscan.
Angelo Gaja's impact on wine production in the last three decades is immeasurable. Taking over the family business in 1970, Gaja faced the challenge of preserving the inherent power and depth of Nebbiolo while enhancing the wines with richer colour, fuller fruit, better balance, and a refined style. To achieve this, Gaja embarked on a series of groundbreaking initiatives, including vineyard replanting, the use of temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, the introduction of small oak barrels for aging, and the controversial planting of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay on prime Barbaresco land.
His innovative spirit led him to expand into Tuscany, acquiring the Pieve Santa Restituta estate in Montalcino in 1994 and the Ca'Marcanda estate in Bolgheri in the following year. These estates are dedicated to growing Sangiovese varietals and international grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah, respectively.

They produce an average of 350,000 bottles annually from 100 hectares of vineyards spread across Barbaresco, Treiso, Barolo, Serralunga d'Alba, La Morra, Montalcino, and Bolgheri.
