The Clos du Roi is one of Beaune’s most revered Premier Crus, perched in the north of the appellation and long prized for wines of depth and longevity, often likened in stature to those of nearby Corton.
The 1998 vintage was uneven but ultimately very fine for reds, and Ampeau’s Clos du Roi shows the rewards of patience. It is drinking beautifully now, with a layered core of red and blue fruit, gentle herbaceous notes, still-present but resolved tannic structure, and savoury accents of Earl Grey tea and sous bois. A mature Burgundy with poise, complexity, and plenty of life ahead.
It's worth noting that as these wines have remained unmoved in the cold cellars at Ampeau since bottling, the conditions for slow, undisturbed maturation are perfect.
