Optimal drinking window: Now - 2034

"The 2004 has been anticipated with great keenness. There's a lovely autolytic ripeness on the nose, with just a touch of papaya. The moment you let it breath, there are more candy tones and preserved ginger. Eminently drinkable now, it would equally benefit from another five-ten years' ageing... but who can wait that long?"
Tom Harrow, Honest Grapes Wine Director for Esquire

The 2004 vintage was a delight for Champagne growers, experiencing a cool early summer which developed into a warm end to the season. This helped the grapes retain the necessary acidity, combined with concentrated fruit juice.

Bollinger R.D. is the logical extension of their prestigious Grand Année, achieved by ageing the wine longer on its lees. R.D. stands for recemment degorge or 'recently disgorged' in the hard working English tongue: R.D. is a registered trademark by Bollinger. They only make R.D. in the finest vintages, remaining a unique expression of its pedigree and the vintage which defines its creation. In 2004 Bollinger have produced one of their greatest ever R.D., a blend of 66% Pinot Noir and 34% Chardonnay.

What the critics say:

98/100Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast

"The wine's name stands for recently disgorged and this vintage Champagne was taken off its lees in 2018. That gave many years for it to develop its depth of flavor, richness and beautifully memorable toasty flavors. Drink through 2028."

97/100Yohan Castaing, Decanter

"This is Bollinger’s 2004 interpretation of their famous barrel-aged, recently-disgorged Champagne. This time around it's a blend of 66% Pinot Noir and 34% Chardonnay, having received a dosage of 3g/l before being cellared under cork, unlike the usual practice of using a crown cap for this phase. A bouquet of raisins and spice jumps out of the glass, propelled by a magnificent mint-toned freshness. Tight and crystalline on the palate, it's dense and yet not all that vinous in mouthfeel. The finish is one of ethereal lightness and magnificent balance. Drink with well-aged cheese."
