The 2012 Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Les Georges is exactly why mature red Burgundy is the holy grail.

"Classic St G aromas rise up from the glass like Autumnal morning mist. Jam tarts and well done pastry, damp clay, forest floor, and coffee bean, with ichorous, ferrous, and then sweeter raspberry pastille notes developing, underpinned by quarried stone. Palate is similarly broad, tannins are old school NSG, like a Gothic Cathedral with Imposing structure and soaring arches, quite lateral but not aggressive, spiced plum and tight berries, underbrush and loam, showing a mildly balsamic and briny finish. Takes time in the glass (or cellar) to thaw but rewarding to appreciate it's patrician gravitas and resonance."

Les Georges holds a place in Nuits much like Chambertin does in Gevrey. The only reason it wasn’t classified Grand Cru in the 1930s is because growers didn’t want to pay the higher taxes that came with the designation — the quality, however, has always been at that level.
