We were recently offered a tiny parcel of mature Hospices de Nuits Burgundy from our dear friend Romain Taupenot of Domaine Taupenot-Merme — one of the greatest names in Nuits-Saint-Georges.

A couple of sample bottles made their way to HG HQ, and both wines were excellent. The 2012 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Georges was nothing short of breathtaking. Les Georges holds a place in Nuits much like Chambertin does in Gevrey. The only reason it wasn’t classified Grand Cru in the 1930s is because growers didn’t want to pay the higher taxes that came with the designation. The quality, however, has always been at that level. For mature, top-address Burgundy of this pedigree, it’s exceptional value.

The Les Vignerondes was glorious in its own right — a beautifully open, expressive wine with sweet, evolved notes of red plums and strawberries. Chalky acidity brings precision and lift, while those savoury, brick-dust tannins add Nuits character. A secondary wave of smoky minerals rolls through the mid-palate, building into a gently saline, mouthwatering finish.

This is exactly why mature red Burgundy is the holy grail, and these wines can be on your table in time for Christmas. Grab a case before they go.
