The Pouilly-Fuissé Premier Cru Clos Sur La Roche 2021 from Domaine Saumaize-Michelin is a striking example of top-flight Chardonnay from the Mâconnais. Clos Sur La Roche is a walled vineyard with a distinctive terroir of limestone-rich soils, giving the wine both power and finesse.

"Tasting the range earlier this month I was shocked by how well they stood up to the Cote d'Or, outshining even the odd Puligny 1er Cru."
Tom Harrow, Head Wine Guru

The 2021 vintage is elegant and precise: aromas of citrus, white peach, and pear mingle with floral notes and a subtle touch of hazelnut and mineral spice. On the palate, it shows remarkable depth and concentration, with a crystalline core of fruit wrapped in a chalky, saline tension. The finish is long, vibrant, and beautifully balanced - a classic Pouilly-Fuissé.

What the critics say:

92/100Neal Martin, Vinous

"The 2021 Pouilly-Fuissé Sur La Roche 1er Cru has one of the most transparent bouquets, perhaps bestowed the most mineralité. Orange zest, nettle and blackcurrant leaf aromas develop in the glass. The palate is well-balanced, linear and saline, delivering plenty of energy toward the finish that lingers in the mouth. This is going to be very satisfying. Excellent."

90-93/100Allen Meadows, Burghound

"Here too the wood treatment is no longer subtle though neither is it invasive on the ripe and fresh aromas of pear and apple compote, lemon rind and wafting spice nuances. The citrus character is also present on the dense and sappy medium-bodied flavors that also exude a bracing salinity on the moderately austere finale that isn't quite as persistent but offers slightly better depth. This should age well if desired."
