The Catena family are pioneers in the truest sense of the word, with Nicolás Catena Zapata responsible for bringing Malbec over to the Andes in the early 20th century to the cool-climate and high-altitude of the vineyard sites in Gualtallary, recognised by Decanter as Argentina's first Grand Crus.  Catena Zapata was voted #1 World's Best Vineyards 2023.

Fourth generation Adrianna Catena is a historian and lecturer as well as a winemaker, and together with Catena Zapata head winemaker, Alejandro Vigil, set up El Enemigo in 2009, focussing on Cabernet Franc, and producing the first wine from Argentina to earn 100 points from The Wine Advocate. Adrianna and Alejandro have recently embarked on a new project in Gredos, Spain, La Reina, having purchased the revered El Reventon vineyard from Dani Landes of cult winery Commando G. The focus at la Reina is old vine Garnacha and Luis Gutierrez notes “having the Catena team arriving in Gredos is something big… this is a new name to keep on your radars.”
