Clemens Busch’s ‘Raffes’ is a dry Riesling from a tiny, prized corner of the Falkenlay section in Pündericher Marienburg in the Mosel. The name comes from a small cadastral parcel tucked into some of Falkenlay’s oldest terraces, where steep grey slate slopes and vines planted around the mid-20th century naturally give very low yields and beautifully concentrated fruit. Sheltered from cold easterly winds, this little pocket ripens exceptionally well, delivering both power and precision.
It’s classified as a GL (Grosse Lage), the top vineyard level in the VDP system, essentially the German equivalent of a Grand Cru.
What the critics say:
"The 2017 Pündericher Marienburg Riesling Raffes is the essence of gray slate. Bright in color and flavors but also intense and intermixed with lemon-fresh stony notes, this is a concentrated yet pure, fresh and finessed, highly intense and refined Riesling with great length and an endless finish. This is a powerful but Auslese-styled Riesling with concentration, finesse and lots of power but no alcoholic impression. The wine was bottled with 13% alcohol and almost nine grams of residual sugar."
