The story of Poggio Valente begins in 1996, when Elisabetta Geppetti acquired a vineyard that turned out to be a perfect home for Sangiovese, Tuscany’s flagship grape. After replanting, this site quickly began to showcase its full potential.

The wine comes from a single 10-hectare cru in Pereta, just 6km from the Tuscan coast, sitting at 350 metres above sea level. The mix of clay and sandstone soils gives the wine energy, freshness and depth. As Monica Larner of Wine Advocate puts it, Poggio Valente “has evolved over the years to become Maremma’s answer to Brunello di Montalcino.

Elisabetta Geppetti took over the family estate, Fattoria Le Pupille, in the 1980s at just 20 years old. With vision and determination, she transformed it into one of Maremma’s most respected wineries—first gaining acclaim with the pioneering Super Tuscan, Saffredi. Today, the estate’s wines, grown among rolling hills and olive groves, continue to reflect the authenticity and spirit of this coastal corner of Tuscany.

What the critics say:

95+/100Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

"Here is another knock-out bottle in this group of new releases from Fattoria le Pupille. The 2022 Poggio Valente is punchy and bright with terrific clarity of fruit. Winemaking has shifted over the years to prioritize larger oak botte. This change has allowed for more varietal expression with blue flower, heritage rose, tart cherry, rye bread and crushed stone. The wine's flavor signature is wholly Mediterranean with hints of rosemary and lavender. The effect is especially luminous and lifted in 2022. This is an elegant wine with a unique voice."
