Allocations are now open for the seventh vintage of Il Caggio IPSUS Gran Selezione, the 2021 from Giovanni Mazzei, a wine that continues to set the benchmark for Sangiovese. At our Icons tasting, a bottle of Ipsus was a highlight for many; for some, including a colleague, it was the wine of the night, even next to Solaia and Siepi. A future legend from an outstanding vintage.
Critics are raving about Ipsus 2021. James Suckling awards 99 points, calling it “sleek and restrained, with aromas of slate, minerals, dried cherries, potpourri, cinnamon, orange zest, red currants and violets… long and crisp, intoxicatingly savoury, will age beautifully.” Jane Anson gives 98 points, describing it as “exceptional quality, full of vibrant energy – impossible to resist.”
From a single 6.5ha clos in Castellina in Chianti, on clay, schist and calcareous soils, IPSUS uses special massal Sangiovese clones, matured in a mix of large barrels, tonneaux and ceramic vats for remarkable finesse.
Production is tiny, with just 6,000 bottles plus a few magnums and double magnums. Thanks to our relationship with Giovanni, we’re offering Ipsus at a market-leading price.
