Giovanni Mazzei, a descendant of the esteemed Marchesi Mazzei family, carries a legacy that dates back to 1398 when his ancestor Ser Lapo Mazzei first documented Chianti wine. Another forebear, Filippo Mazzei, was personally invited by President Jefferson to introduce vine cultivation to Virginia. Giovanni’s lifelong ambition has been to create a Sangiovese that rivals Tuscany’s finest wines, elevating Chianti Classico to unprecedented heights.

He discovered the ideal terroir and vines to fulfill this ambition in the “Clos,” a prized 6.5-hectare vineyard planted in Il Caggio in 2008. With consistently outstanding scores, Giovanni is well on his way to achieving his goal.

Antonio Galloni has boldly stated that Ipsus “very clearly [has] the potential to become one of Italy’s most important wines,” and the consistently high accolades it receives are drawing significant attention.

What the critics say:

100/100Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

"Jeweled ruby in colour, each step though the palate adds another layer of nuance and enjoyment. Riven through with sage, thyme, rosemary, raspberries, red cherries, black tea, bay, saffron, oyster shell and fine but creamy tannins. Sums up the idea of balanced fruit, tannins and acidity in a way that can sound overly simple but in reality is one of the hardest things to achieve - but you know it when you taste it. Stainless steel fermentation with native yeasts that begin fermentation naturally, aged across a mix of 70% new oak, 20% in 1,500l oak barrels and the final 10% in ceramic vats. Once the blend of different formats takes place, the wine spends another six months in ceramic vats, followed by 14 months in bottle."
