This wine pays tribute to Philip Mazzei (1730–1816), a forward-thinking ancestor of the Mazzei family. A political philosopher, friend of Thomas Jefferson, and an early advocate of viticulture in Virginia, Philip Mazzei’s influence even reached the U.S. Declaration of Independence - JFK once noted that Jefferson paraphrased his writings for the famous phrase “All men are created equal.”

The wine itself is a Tuscan Cabernet Sauvignon blend sourced from the family’s estates. Bold and polished, it shows ripe dark fruit, spice, and a firm yet refined structure—very much a modern expression of Tuscany.

The Mazzei family has been making wine in Chianti Classico since 1435, making them one of Italy’s oldest winemaking dynasties. Based at Castello di Fonterutoli, just south of Castellina in Chianti, they combine centuries of tradition with an innovative, forward-looking approach. Today, the Mazzeis craft wines across Tuscany and beyond, with Philip standing as a proud link between their Italian roots and their family’s historic ties to America.

What the critics say:

95/100James Suckling

"A fresh and crunchy pure cabernet sauvignon with aromas of currants and orange peel. Medium-bodied and delicate, with velvety tannins and a long and beautiful structure. A blend of cab from vineyards in Maremma and Chianti Classico. Drink or hold."

94/100Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

"Goes long on the black fruit character of Cabernet, shot through with freshly cut herbs and spices, bitter chocolate, grippy tannins, this is an excellent vintage of a wine that is named after Philip (Filippo) de Mazzei, a political thinker who went to the States during the American Revolution, and helped write the first constitution with Washington and Jefferson. Aged in American and French oak in celebration of that history, first vintage 2008."
