Touted as "one of the world's greatest wineries" by Robert Parker, Shafer's main focus has been on the luxuriant, richly textured Cabernet Sauvignon from their Stags Leap Vineyard, however father and son John and Doug Shafer also produce exceptional wines throughout Napa Valley and Carneros.
What the critics say:
"The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon TD-9 is a smoking value, and it certainly competes with wines 2-3 times the price. Blackberries, dried flowers, black cherries, and leafy tobacco are just some of the nuances, and it’s medium to full-bodied, has silky tannins, and a layered, impossible to resist style. A blend of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 11% Malbec, and the rest Petit Verdot, it’s going to evolve for 10-15 years."
"Aromas of blackberries with old spice, dark cherries and cloves, following through to a medium to full body with a sold core of ripe fruit and a creamy and stony underlying character. Juicy and rich, yet not overbearing. Cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec and petit verdot. Drinkable now, but better in 2025."
