Wynns Coonawarra Estate, with roots tracing back to the late 1800s, is one of the leading wine producers in the Coonawarra region. Founded in 1951, it is the largest single vineyard, boasting the finest and oldest vineyard sites in Coonawarra.
The estate's origins date back to Scottish pioneer John Riddoch, who planted vineyards in 1891 and completed the iconic three-gabled winery in 1896. In 1951, Melbourne wine merchants Samuel and David Wynn acquired Riddoch’s vineyards and winery, renaming it Wynns Coonawarra Estate. The Wynns family recognised the inherent quality of Coonawarra wines, known for their richness and intense fruit character, and worked to establish a distinctive identity in the region. They developed the iconic label that has made John Riddoch’s winery one of Australia’s most recognised symbols of heritage and refinement, values that Wynns continues to uphold.
What the critics say:
"The 2022 John Riddoch Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon is routinely a magnificent wine, a bastion of age-worthy Cabernet, framed in the Coonawarra paradigm of ripe fruit and ferruginous tannin. Here, the 2022 tastes bloody, meaty and chewy, with sweet roasted marrow and black exotic spices. Everything about this vintage is black. The wine is brooding and intense, yet it is also pure and focused; blackberry, pomegranate molasses, cassis, sumac and aniseed all mingle among the sea of structuring, cocoa-powder-esque tannins. It's a thing of inchoate beauty, one that will unfurl over many decades to come. 13.5% alcohol. Sealed under natural cork."
"Quite a smokey, reductive nose at first. Excellent structure, full and wide in the mouth but with soft powdery tannins that grow in structure as time goes on. Wonderfully ripe and rich - blackcurrants, black cherries and cigar smoke. Juicy and sumptuous, this is rich and is something you want to curl up around a hot fire in the winter. Captivating and so well made. Carries lovely flavours but with a moreish element that you just want another glass straight away. Eminently drinkable. Ends stony, fresh, minty with a herbal tinge."
