Giovanni Mazzei, heir to the illustrious Marchesi Mazzei family, carries a winemaking heritage that stretches back to 1398, when his ancestor Ser Lapo Mazzei first recorded the term 'Chianti'. Another notable forebear, Filippo Mazzei, was invited by President Jefferson to bring vine cultivation to Virginia—an early chapter in the family’s remarkable global influence.

Driven by the ambition to craft a Sangiovese that could stand alongside Tuscany’s greatest wines, Giovanni set out to redefine the heights of Chianti Classico. He found his canvas in 'Il Clos', a treasured 6.5-hectare vineyard planted in Il Caggio in 2008, where ideal soils and exposure meet meticulous care.

The results speak for themselves: Ipsus has achieved consistently outstanding scores and critical acclaim. As Antonio Galloni remarked, Ipsus “very clearly [has] the potential to become one of Italy’s most important wines” - a sentiment increasingly echoed across the fine wine world.

What the critics say:

99/100James Suckling

"This is a sleek, restrained wine with aromas of slate, minerals, earth, dried cherries, potpourri, cinnamon, orange zest, red currants and violets. Graceful on the palate, with a medium to full body, licorice root flavors and fine, velvety tannins. It shows the typical chalky texture of pure sangiovese yet is well covered by fruit. Long and crisp if not zesty, with intoxicating savoriness, it will age beautifully if you can wait. It will be released in October. Try it then."

98/100Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

"Ipsus, from the Il Caggio estate in Castellina in Chianti, is fully in its stride with this 7th vintage. The aromatics are enveloping, lavender, violets, roses, savoury but fully ripe berry fruit, this is exceptional quality, full of vibrant energy, impossible to resist. To be released beginning of October 2025. Single plot at 350m, Mazzei family owners."
