This female star-studded cast of winemakers is an admirable family-run operation that dates back to 1989 when lifeforce of the estate, Patrizia, decided she wanted to make Brunello. What was once a deteriorating property is now a winery buzzing with life and passion. Beyond the hectares of land freckled with olive groves are Sangiovese vines dedicated to producing Brunello di Montalcino.
They aim for the highest quality, with all vineyards meant for Brunello production, whilst they also produce a hidden gem Rosso here that is effectively a "baby Brunello" for early drinking. The vineyards can be found in the southeast at a high altitude with soil composed of volcanic rock and compacted clay (or Galestro). They are harvested by hand and then fermented with indigenous yeasts.
Drinking window: 2024 - 2035
What the critics say:
"The 2019 Brunello Ofelio from Patrizia Cencioni is fragrant and structured, with aromas reminiscent of exotic brown spice, eucalyptus, new leather, forest floor and toasted hazelnut. Focused and savory, the full-bodied palate delivers cherry tart, mandarin orange, licorice and a hint of mocha accompanied by taut, fine-grained tannins that create a velvety texture. Fresh acidity lends tension and keeps it balanced. Made with Sangiovese grown 320 metres above sea level and aged in Slavonian casks, it's hands down the best wine I've had from this estate."
"Dark and dusty in the glass, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Ofelio opens slowly with an array of dried flowers and shavings of cedar giving way to rose-tinged strawberries. This sweeps across the palate with a sovory blend of red fruits, sage and spice as saline minerals slowly saturate toward the close. It finishes structured and long, with finely etched tannins and a pleasant bitter twang of dark chocolate that lingers as hints of tart cranberry fade. Patience will be required. "
