The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Schiena d’Asino from Mastrojanni is a powerful yet finely detailed single-vineyard wine. It’s structured and intense, with firm yet polished tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, mineral-driven finish. A true Riserva in every sense.

The Mastrojanni Estate is situated in the south-east corner of the Montalcino region, set apart up a dirt road from the village of Castelnuovo dell'Abate. The wines are traditional and terroir-driven and the winery eschews the use of barriques as one might expect from such traditionalists.

Having been purchased by coffee giants Illy, the estate has enjoyed even greater success in recent years and is now rated in the top 10 in the region. The vines are enjoying something of a golden age, reaching their "prime production" according to Monica Larner and revealing hauntingly profound expressions of Sangiovese.

What the critics say:

95/100Kerin O’Keefe
95/100Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

"This wine is not labeled Riserva, but it could be for all practical purposes. The Mastrojanni 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Schiena d'Asino has a dry quality of fruit, more brittle, if you will, with fallen autumn leaves, wild game, underbrush, hard salami and black pepper. Like many of the Brunellos from 2018, the primary fruit is not as bright. The tannins are finely textured, but I probably wouldn't age the 2018s as long as I would the 2019s or the 2016s. The last time this wine was made was in 2016, in fact. With this vintage, we have 6,000 bottles."
