A top domaine making rich, succulent wines of great style. Michel Maret has handed over the running of La Charbonnière to his daughters, Véronique who is now the winemaker and her sister Caroline handles the day-to-day.
The "Mourre des Perdrix" vineyard is situated on a gently sloping plateau in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The name translates to "Partridge Hill," inspired by local wildlife. Full-bodied and silky, it will pair beautifully with herb-crusted rack of lamb or slow-cooked beef short ribs, game dishes such as venison or duck breast with a fruit glaze, and rich, earthy dishes like mushroom risotto or truffle-infused pasta.
Optimal drinking window: Now - 2039
What the critics say:
"The plush, expansive 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Mourre des Perdrix exudes plummy richness and hints of licorice and dark chocolate. It's full-bodied and velvety in feel, with a long, warming finish tinged with garrigue and super-ripe berries."
"Checking in at a whopping 16% alcohol, the 2020 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee tvlourre des Perdrix is a shimmering pale ruby. It mingles aromas of ripe red and black fruits, exotic spices, licorice and crushed rocks. Ripe tannins wrap up this full-bodied, concentrated powerhouse, well-balanced by refreshing acidity. It closes with a savory, persistent finish."
