The Tempest is Realm’s Merlot-based blend, sourced mainly from Napa’s southern half, with Merlot from Coombsville and Oak Knoll and Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon drawn from the eastern hillsides above Rutherford. The 2023 growing season moved at a steady, unhurried pace, giving the fruit longer hang time to develop freshness, clarity, and purity. To preserve that elegance, The Tempest is typically bottled earlier than other wines in the Realm portfolio.
"Broad supple tannins on the entry, bright cherry, spice, black tea. Round juicy finish—chocolate, cherry and loamy earth notes. Lifted, bright, playful."
Winemaker's note
First released in 2002, The Tempest was Realm’s very first proprietary wine, named for the “perfect storm” of grape varieties that came together from the same vineyard. A new label was introduced with the 2021 vintage, featuring a commissioned painting by UK artist Richard Twose. The figures perched precariously on chairs represent balance, tension, and the willingness to embrace risk—values at the heart of both Realm’s winemaking and its philosophy.
What the critics say:
"Roughly the same blend and sourcing as the 2022, Realm's 2023 The Tempest displays a lovely herbal-floral element not seen in prior releases. Combined with the intense black cherries, the result is something special. In the mouth, this medium- to full-bodied wine is smooth and silky. Long, with hints of mocha on the finish and framed by fine-grained tannins, this is elegant, lovely stuff."
